  1. How often should I use the ByoPlanet® system?

This will depend on your cleaning protocols and the size of your facility. Electrostatic application of sanitizers and disinfectants reduces labor, reduces chemical usage and better protects your staff, customers, patients and facilities from the spread of infectious diseases.


  1. Is there an electrostatic shock hazard?

When the device is used as intended, and directed, the risk of shock is very low to none.  The ByoPlanet® device is UL (Underwriter Laboratories) Listed and has been tested under UL 73 and CSA 22.2 No. 68 which are standards for motor operated machinery and covers the risk of “electrostatic shock” under general safety.


  1. Do I need to use hearing protection?
No.  The noise level when using the ByoPlanet® System is below the OSHA sound limit.


  1. Does the ByoPlanet® system meet OSHA guidelines for worker safety?

OSHA guidance requires that the employer ensure proper worker safety.  ByoPlanet® has provided advice on the proper use and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to work safely when using the approved disinfecting solutions.  But each employer should evaluate compliance with OSHA.  If recommended, OSHA/MHSA approved PPE should be used.


  1. How is the ByoPlanet® device regulated?

The electrostatic sprayer device is Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Listed (and in Canada, the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada, ULC).  While UL doesn’t regulate products, under the US federal agency Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), electrical equipment used in the workplace must be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), like UL.

UL Listing means that Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has tested representative samples of the product and determined that it meets UL's requirements.  UL is a global independent safety science company that conducts independent testing, validation, certification and verification of products and is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).  ULs requirements are based primarily on its published and nationally recognized Standards for Safety.  The Clorox® Total 360® system has been tested under UL 73 (USA) and CSA 22.2 No. 68 (CAN) which are standards for motor operated machinery and cover the overall safety in terms of fire, electrical shock and overall safety to people and property.


  1. Can I buy or use a longer extension cord?

Yes.  Users can purchase or use a longer extension cord for the electrostatic sprayer.  We recommend using a 12/3-gauge extension cord, no longer than 100 feet (30.5m). Additionally, we recommend the use of a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) power outlet or extension cord. When equipped on the extension cord, always position the GFCI toward the power outlet. Always inspect the cord prior to use and do not utilize if the cord is compromised.


  1. What if the circuit breaker on the device triggers?

Press down the breaker and turn on the unit again. If the breaker triggers repeatedly, please contact ByoPlanet®’s technical support team.


  1. Do I need to wipe down the sprayer/base unit it gets wet after spraying?
Yes.  We recommend wiping down the unit after each use.


  1. Why should I purge my device after each use?

We recommend that you purge your device to remove products from the line and keep the machine clean.  This will prolong the life expectancy of your machine. Simply remove the liquid line and spray until liquid is evacuated from the lines. Please see the SUPPORT section of this website for more detailed instructions.


  1. What surfaces are these products safe to use on?

The master labels for each product contain information on use on items and surfaces.  However, as with any disinfectant product, it should be used according to the label instructions. If you are uncertain whether it can be used on a specific surface, test an inconspicuous area of the surface first.



  1. Does the room need to be sealed off before treatment?

No.  The room does not need to be sealed off.  However, it is good practice to apply a warning sign to the outside of the room being treated to prevent bystanders from entering while the application of product is in progress. Please ensure that there is a properly functioning HVAC system in place for the room.


  1. How long does the product need to stay wet on the surface to be effective?

Dwell time, or contact time, is the amount of time that a surface must remain wet to allow the product to be in contact with an organism in order to kill it.  The contact or dwell time of a product will vary and can be found on the product label. Typical disinfectant dwell times range between 2-10 minutes.


  1. Food Contact vs. Non-Food Contact surfaces?

Nonfood-contact surfaces: For a product to be considered a sanitizer for non-food contact surfaces, it should be capable of reducing the number of organisms on a surface by a minimum of 3 log10 (99.9%).  This means that if there are 1,000,000 organisms on the surface, an effective sanitizer would remove at least 999,000 organisms, with no more than 1000 organisms remaining.

Food-contact surfaces: For a product to be considered a sanitizer for food contact surfaces, it should be capable of reducing the number of organisms on a surface by a minimum of 5 log10 (99.999%).  This means that if there are 1,000,000 organisms on the surface, an effective sanitizer would remove at least 999,990 organisms, with no more than 10 organisms remaining.



  1. What is the re-entry time when using the ByoPlanet® electrostatic devices?

Always follow all label, PPE and USE instructions. Occupational exposure monitoring (following conservative conditions and heavy use scenarios) and quantitative risk assessment using EPA methods indicate that it is acceptable for bystanders to re-enter the room after the spray treatment is completed.


  1. What are Electrostatics?

Electrostatic spraying is the process of applying a charged liquid to a surface.  In the process, liquids are atomized into droplets which are the charged by the application of an electrical current as they exit the sprayer.  When the charged droplets approach a surface, they induce an opposite charge on the surface which then attracts the charged droplet to the surface.  The charged droplets also repel each other, preventing them from coalescing into larger droplets.  The repulsion also allows the droplet to uniformly cover surfaces.  Droplets can even be attracted to the backs of surfaces regardless of the direction of spray, enabling them to “wrap” around a range of surface types including curved surfaces.  In this respect, electrostatic spraying can be considered an “active” application technology in that liquid droplets are attracted to surfaces. With normal or non-charged “passive” spraying, the coverage of surfaces is determined by the direction of spray and where the droplets fall based on the effect of gravity and may result in uneven surface coverage. 

The electrostatic spraying process has been used for more than 60 years in painting and agriculture applications.1 In agriculture, electrostatic sprayers are used for the efficient application of pesticides to plants, to help treat the “hidden” undersides of leaves that pesticides applied using regular non-charged spray applications are unable to reach.  The more uniform coverage of the fine electrostatically charged droplets also allows for better coverage of surfaces with less pesticide compared to application with a non-charged sprayer.


  1. How can I demonstrate the effectiveness of the device?
Test Data: Our research and development teams have spent the last 7 years testing and verifying the effectiveness of our sprayer paired with various disinfectants and that test data is available upon request.

Dye Test: Kits are available for you to conduct this simple demonstration where tape is randomly placed around an area to be sprayed. The dye is then mixed with water and sprayed over a target surface. Once spraying is complete, the tape is removed and a florescent light is used to show the full coverage. 

Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) Testing: An ATP meter can be used to quickly show the reduction of ATP after the disinfectant application. The meter measures the presence of ATP, energy, to prove that bacteria or viruses are present. Readings should be taken prior to disinfection and then immediately after to show the reduction in ATP levels.

(Note: ATP readers are not the most accurate and can produce/exhibit high, false, readings if you do not allow the disinfectant to completely dry before re-testing)

Laboratory Culture Testing: This type of test is more costly but can be an important test for hospitals. This requires a certified Lab that can sample and culture pre and post swabs of micro-organisms.


  1. What Personal Protective Equipment - PPE is required?

Make sure to read the product label regarding PPE and Use Instructions prior to spraying.  An employee should wear special clothing or equipment to protect him or herself while cleaning and disinfecting. PPE protects the employee from microorganisms and chemicals being used that could enter the body through the skin, eye, nose, or mouth. The exact PPE needed for cleaning and disinfection depends on the microorganism, the chemical being used, and the length of exposure to these agents. PPE can include gloves, gowns, mask, and eye protection. At a minimum, protective gloves are usually recommended for cleaning and disinfection.


  1. What does “environmental surface” mean?

The environment refers to the patient or resident’s surroundings. When we talk about cleaning the environment, typically we are referring to cleaning and disinfecting objects, like housekeeping surfaces (e.g., floors, tabletops) and medical equipment. It is particularly important to focus on cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched items, such as bedrails, tray tables, IV poles, call button, monitor screens and controls and cables, pump controls, bedside tables, telephones, carts, toilets, bedpans, sinks, door knobs and levers, light switches, and faucet handles. Electrostatic application is the most comprehensive way to reach and treat all surface area without the risk of cross contamination.


  1. What kind of products will clog the sprayer?

Most water-based products work well in the device. Chemicals left to solidify or dry-out within the liquid passages of the sprayer. All products should be pre-approved through ByoPlanet® prior to being used in the electrostatic sprayer or you may risk nullifying the product Warranty.


  1. Can I clean and disinfect at the same time?

The dirtier the surface the less effective the disinfectant. Disinfectants need to contact the area to disinfect and cannot do this effectively with a barrier of dirt or grime in the way.  Once the dirt has been wiped away the disinfectant can get to work.  Under lightly soiled conditions, you can clean and disinfect in the same step. (NOTE: EPA requires all disinfectants carry the following label direction: “For heavily soiled areas, a pre-cleaning step is required”.)


  1. What is the difference between cleaning, disinfection and sterilization?

Cleaning: refers to the removal of visible soil and organic material (i.e., dirt, body fluids, etc.) from objects by washing or scrubbing with water and detergents or soaps and rinsing with water. Thorough cleaning is needed before disinfection or sterilization because organic material can decrease the effectiveness of those processes. A detergent is a cleaning agent that does not claim to kill microorganisms.

Disinfection: refers to process of removing many or all microorganisms that can cause disease, except bacterial spores. There are three levels of disinfection, depending on how many organisms are removed: high, intermediate and low. A disinfectant is a chemical or a physical agent (e.g. ultraviolet radiation) that kills microorganisms, but not bacterial spores. Disinfectants are also classified as high-level, intermediate-level, and low-level.

Sterilization: refers to the complete elimination of all forms of microbial life including bacterial spores. Objects can be sterilized by physical processes (i.e., intense steam and pressure or dry heat) or by using certain chemicals.


  1. What products can I spray through the sprayer?

All products are required to be EPA approved.  If you have questions about your specific product, please contact ByoPlanet® prior to use. Make sure to read all product label and use instructions prior to application.  Always wear the proper PPE and respect kill/dwell times.  Improper use of a chemical though the sprayer may nullify warranty.


  1. How durable is the ES-120™ Electrostatic sprayer?

Extremely durable. The ES-120’s enclosure is made from high impact resistant thermoplastic. This ensures the sprayer to have high resistance to breakages, good resistance to abrasion and normal wear, chemical resistance and high dielectric strength.


  1. Do I need to perform any maintenance on the compressor?

Yes, occasion inspection/cleaning of the air inlet filter. This can be done simply by vacuuming off dust/debris build up or using compressed air to blow the filter clean.


  1. How do I know the electrostatics are working?

There is a green indicator light on your sprayer that will illuminate when the trigger is depressed, and your batteries are carrying sufficient power. This light lets you know that the droplets leaving the gun are electrostatically charged. The light will only illuminate whilst airflow is provided from a base unit and the trigger is being pressed. If the LED light does not illuminate - it may be time to change the battery.


  1. Do you have to release the pressure in the tank after every use?

No, the latest generation CS-900 Series units automatically release tank pressure moments after the power is turned off.


  1. What is the Fill Level on the CS-900™ tank?

The fill level can be easily identified by the “Max Fill Level” decal attached to the tank. It is important the tank is not over filled. The fill level should stay below 4" from the top of the tank, well below the air inlet tube. If the level is too high, there is an opportunity for liquid to be drawn into the inlet tube damaging the pressure regulator.

  1. How often do I need to change the battery?

The ByoPlanet® Lithium-ion battery pack will yield approximately 50-70 hours of spray time, depending on application. Do NOT attempt to recharge the battery. Doing so will nullify your product warranty. Please see the STORE section of this website to purchase additional batteries.


  1. Are there any serviceable sections of the ES-120 sprayer?

The only serviceable parts of the sprayer are the battery, the liquid filter, the quick connects, and the nozzle cover can be removed to be cleaned. Please see our SUPPORT section of this website and / or the complete product manual for additional detail.

  1. What are the advantages of using electrostatic sprayers?

  1. Why do I need ByoPlanet®?
